Arleen Sorkin, acclaimed for her iconic portrayal of Harley Quinn’s voice in the animated DC Universe, has passed away at the age of 67.

The sad news was shared by DC co-head James Gunn on Instagram, where he paid tribute to Sorkin’s remarkable contribution to the character of Harley Quinn. In a heartfelt message, he expressed, “Farewell, Arleen Sorkin, the remarkably gifted original voice behind Harley Quinn, who played an instrumental role in shaping the character adored by many of us.”

Sorkin’s journey in the entertainment industry began in 1982 when she appeared as a background actor on Saturday Night Live. She furthered her career with roles in TV shows like Duet (1987), Open House (1989), Dream On (1990), and Perry Mason: The Case of the Killer Kiss.

Her most notable role came in 1992 when she lent her voice to Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated Series. This marked the beginning of a legacy as she continued to voice the character in other shows including Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, Gotham Girls, Justice League, and Static Shock. Sorkin’s voice also became synonymous with Harley Quinn in DC video games like Batman: Arkham Asylum, DC Universe Online, and DC Universe Online: The Last Laugh.

Beyond her work in the animated world, Sorkin also made her mark in the NBC daytime soap Days of Our Lives, portraying the character Calliope Jones Bradford.

Actor Mark Hamill, who worked closely with Sorkin on Batman: The Animated Series, expressed his grief on social media, saying, “Devastated to learn we’ve lost the brilliant Arleen Sorkin. Not just a wonderful talent, but a truly wonderful person. I’m grateful not only to have worked with her but to have been her friend. 🙏 Sending my heartfelt condolences to her family & loved ones.”
